Songs of the Storm is a meditative documentary exploring how artists process devastation and grief through their work.
The film follows two Western North Carolina creators in the wake of Hurricane Helene: Sarah Elizabeth Burkey, an Appalachian ballad singer who draws her healing inspiration from the natural world, and Doug Carr, a visual artist and musician transforming trauma into powerful electronic sound.
Told in two chapters, each shaped by the rhythm of a song, their stories culminate in performances that reflect resilience, loss, and renewal. Though different in practice, both are bound by the same storm and a shared landscape.
Directed and produced by Aaron Stone and Caroline Aylward, Songs of the Storm will be screened on Sunday, September 27, 2026 from 6 to 6:45 p.m. at the Madison County Arts Council, 90 South Main Street in Marshall, NC.
Filmmaker Aaron Stone will also share a look into an ongoing documentary and archival project made in collaboration with our dearly missed Pat Franklin. The project is an exploration of the traditional music scene within these mountains and the people who have carried these traditions forward.
On this day celebrating Pat, Aaron will share moments from her final interview, offering a glimpse into her character, stories, and a touch of her enduring humor. While the project is still taking shape, the time spent with Pat has only cemented the importance of preserving this rich history and ensuring these stories continue to be shared. This event is FREE and open to the public.
