Kate Sorrells, a singer/songwriter from Mars Hill, NC, has released a song she wrote as a tribute to everyone who suffered the devastation of Hurricane Helene.

Sorrells grew up around Asheville and attended North Buncombe High School in Weaverville. During Helene she saw entire towns get washed away. She had to file missing person reports for people she’s known since childhood. Because she felt so helpless and didn’t know what to do for the community, she decided to write the song “Mountain Strong.”

Her message of hope embodies the resilience of the Appalachian people.
