With the active lifestyles of the new millennium, outdoor recreation has become a priority activity for today’s traveler. With hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, white water rafting and canoeing rivers, creeks with a variety of fish habitation and a ski slope, Madison County has it all.
The hiking opportunities are endless. The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) runs the length of the county and through trail hikers often stop in Hot Springs, one of three towns whose main street is the trail itself. With nine access points on the A.T., one can choose the length and difficulty desired. A variety of other hiking opportunities are available as well, including loop trails out of Hot Springs that tie into the A.T., or a short stroll to the scenic vista of Max Patch.
A variety of water activities abound in Madison County. Half day or full day white water rafting and kayaking trips are offered by several county outfitters. Or one can rent a canoe and float easy white water above Hot Springs or just cool off in one of the many swimming holes around the county.
