WHAT IS JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT?

Junior Achievement (JA) is a nonprofit organization that has been serving the youth of WNC since 1978 in grades K-12 with programs in Financial Literacy, Workforce Readiness, and Entrepreneurship. These programs are delivered directly in the classroom by volunteers in the community who recognize the impact that we can have on a child’s life… just by showing them how amazing they are and what possibilities lie ahead in their future. Don’t you wish you had learned more about saving money when you were younger?!

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO “TEACH” IN A CLASSROOM?

Have no fear – the children are here! Volunteers are given detailed curriculum that is games-based, interactive, and age-appropriate. Volunteers don’t “teach or lecture” as much as they “facilitate learning” by getting the youth to think critically and solve problems on their own. Classroom teachers are present in the room the entire time and the children are always thrilled to have “someone from outside of school” come in to work with them. Elementary school lessons range from “wants vs. needs” and “why saving is important” to “how money works” and “what is means to have a job.”

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?

The programs for 5th graders and 3rd graders will each be done over in two to three hours on each of two consecutive days.

The 8th grade program will require 5 class periods to complete (about 1 hour and 15 minutes each) on five separate days.
