The beauty, challenges, and rewards of three routes await you.
We’re looking forward to seeing all bikers on Saturday, July 8th!
Three distances to choose from – 100 miles, 100 km, and 50 km.
Big Laurel Grind (50km) Start time: 8:30 AM
– This is not a ride for the faint of heart – riders will cover the 50 kilometer (31.2 mile) course and achieve a total ascent of 3,157 feet. We estimate the fastest riders will cover the course in under 2 hours and those taking it at a more moderate pace will finish within 3 hours.
Devil’s Fork Metric Century (100 km) Start time: 8:00 AM
– This is a tough course; we encourage inexperienced distance riders or mountain riders to ride the Big Laurel Grind their first year. The 100 kilometer course begins on Highway 213 and turns onto Gabriel’s Creek Road. The next 10 miles is a series of warm-up hills through the rolling country of southern Madison County. At Silvers Mill Road, the course splits from the 100 mile century, crosses NC 213 in Petersburg and moves directly towards the mountains that will be the main challenge for the rest of the course.
Doggett Mountain Challenge (100 miles) Start time: 7:30 AM
– This course is one of the toughest you will find east of the Rockies and should not be attempted by inexperienced mountain riders! The course leaves from Mars Hill and offers rolling hills for the first twenty miles, climbing a total of 2,200 feet by mile 20. Then as you roll through the valley in Sandy Mush you will see Doggett Mountain looming in front of you. After over 10,000 feet of total elevation gain you’ll be happy to see the finish line.
All rides start and end on the campus of Mars Hill University. There are well stocked rest stops about every 15 miles on each course. There will be multiple SAG vehicles roving the course to provide assistance to riders who need it.
At the end of the ride, cyclists will be greeted with a refreshingly cold wet towel to help them cool down. The post-ride meal has been described as epic! Showers are available in the college gym for those who want to clean up before heading home.
Hot Doggett is a fun, non-competitive athletic event. We are delighted to welcome riders with e-bikes, provided that they are pedal-bikes. The Big Laurel Grind is perfect for most e-bike riders. So bring your class 1 e-bike and enjoy our fabulous mountain roads and scenery. But please be aware that class 2 & 3 e-bikes (electric mopeds) are not allowed for safety reasons.
We take rider safety seriously, and to doing everything we can to help you safely get the most out of the famous Hot Doggett!
